VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: At BoredLess, we provide culture audits, consulting, and facilitation all based in the neuroscience of play to effect organizational transformation. But it’s also my mission to help adults prioritize play in their lives.  I’ve created a course called Flow and Play: How to Achieve Peak Performance and Experience. I’m so excited to share with you the fantastic science, skills, and strategies of flow and play that can help you feel and perform your best in life and work. You might be wondering, what are flow and play, and why are they important. Have you ever felt so absorbed in what you were doing that you lost track of time and everything else seemed to fade away? That is what scientists call flow, an optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best. Flow is often associated with peak performance, creativity, and happiness. But how often do you experience flow in your daily life? Even though, as we will learn in this course, flow is accessible for all of us, at home and at work, most of the time, we are either bored, anxious, or somewhere in between. The graphic you see here illustrates the relationship between challenge and ability, two key factors that influence our state of consciousness and generally just how we approach daily activities. When the challenge of an activity equals your ability, you are likely to enter flow. However, when the challenge is too low or too high for your ability, this is when you experience boredom, anxiety, or even total apathy. The zone in the center - the zone of acceptable mediocrity- this is where the challenge and ability are both moderate, but not enough to trigger flow. This is where you do things that are not too hard or too easy, but also not very interesting or rewarding. This is where you settle for good enough, but not great. Why do people stay in this zone? There could be many reasons, such as a fear of failure, lack of motivation, ambiguous feedback, loss of autonomy, or indifference. Whatever the reason, staying in this zone can lead to dissatisfaction, stagnation, and wasted potential. Don’t settle for acceptable mediocrity. Aim for excellence and flow. This course will show you how. But don’t worry this isn’t another hustle culture, wake up at 3am for your cold plunge type of advice. We get to find flow through play! Flow is the state of mind where you are fully immersed, focused, and energized by what you are doing. You lose track of time, feel a sense of joy, and achieve optimal results. Play is the best way to stimulate your brain, enhance your creativity, and experience joy.  Play can get into flow more easily and frequently. In this course, you will learn how to access flow and play in your everyday life. We will discuss the neuroscience and benefits of these states for your brain and cognition. You will also learn the essential skills and qualities that flow and play can enhance in your life and at work, such as curiosity, resilience, collaboration, innovation, and so much more.
